Email lifecycle
Every email status and how emails move between them.
Statuses
Every email you send carries a status. It starts at queued and moves forward as it is handed to the mail provider and SES reports delivery events back.
| Status | Meaning |
|---|---|
queued | Accepted, being processed |
sent | Handed to provider |
delivered | SES Delivery |
bounced | SES Bounce |
complained | SES Complaint |
opened | Tracking pixel after delivery |
clicked | Tracking link after delivery |
How emails move between statuses
- Send —
POST /v1/emailsaccepts the email asqueued; when it is handed to the mail provider, the status flips tosent. - Delivery — an SES
Deliveryevent moves the email todelivered. - Bounce — an SES
Bounceevent moves the email tobouncedand flips the linked contact tobouncedas well. - Complaint — an SES
Complaintevent (recipient marks the email as spam) moves the email tocomplainedand flips the linked contact tocomplained. - Opens and clicks — when the recipient loads the tracking pixel or clicks a tracked link, the status moves to
opened/clicked. See Tracking and events.
Status visibility
There is no public status-polling endpoint today: statuses are dashboard-only. To watch how events flow back from SES in real time, see Tracking and events.
